A thought provoking hall play

A wonderfully night of hall play

Every year around this time, I will have the great privilege and honor to watch the amazing productions put up by our residents. Last Saturday, I watched the hall play. This coming Sunday, XQRJ. Middle of next week, Chinese Drama. Not too long within this month, Amplitude and later Dance Uncensored. After seven years of living in the hall, I am still deeply impressed with the passions of generations of residents in driving these great productions year after year.

This blog is dedicated to the hall play crews. I have to be very honest with you that I am not a fan of ‘English’. Throughout my years of education, English has been a chore and a burden. Hence, you would have imagined what Hall Play is to people like me especially when the casts speak with a strong accent. Having said that, I have to say that for the last two years, I have enjoyed the hall play significantly. The scripts were easy to understand and hilarious. The casts played the all important role to tease out the essence and fun of the play. I can see the passions of the casts overflowing on the stage and infectiously spread laughter and joys to all those who have the privilege of watching it. These resulted in stella performance. I am sure the residents felt that too. Somehow, not all the hall plays prior to recent two failed to achieve that. I wondered why?

The point I am hinting at is the importance of aligning the passions of people towards an organization’s goal. I have witnessed the transformative effects of such channelling in my beloved residents in hall play when it is done right versus times when it is not. This resulted in the differences in performance. However, I wonder if is this an art or a science? I suppose it should be more of science than art. If so, how can we systematically develop this as a capability that we can harness in an organization? It seems strange that none of these sorts of thoughts would have occurred to me in the past, but in more recent years, these random thoughts often come in a time unexpected when I am least prepared. Is this sign of my head permanently damaged? :) Nonetheless, I recognized that these are very important thoughts that I need to capture for future application. I thank the superb performance of hall plays crews that help me see this serendipity find in life.

Having given my praise, I thought I should take this opportunity to share my observations on area of improvements. I do see many great potentials in our residents in hall play that remain untapped and unexplored. I wondered what it would be liked to see them blossom. One area that I believe is in the area of stage design. For the last two years, the stage design has opt for a one set for the whole play approach. I think you can do better than that. I believe much can be learned from the Chinese Drama crews. Perhaps another area is to adopt scripts that will nurture out the ability of the casts to fully engage the audience in more than one way. I wish hall play crews next year can continue to venture into the arts and sciences on how to channelling participants’ passions towards the making of a great hall play performance.
