The goals for 2011 are set. It is not going to be easy but possible. A discussion with my running mates yields the following targets:
- Sundown Marathon May 2011 – half marathon. My goal is to complete this half marathon in less than 2 hrs 30 minutes.

Sundown Marathon
- Newton Run Oct 2011 – 30 km marathon. My goal is to complete this close to full marathon in less than 4 hrs 30 minutes. Unfortunately, Newton Run 2011 is not up yet but the 2010 website can be found here.
- Taroko Gorge Marathon Nov 2011, Taiwan – full marathon. This will be our first full marathon in the cooling weather in Taiwan. It will also be our first oversea run. The route should be around the Taroko National Park which is renowned for its stunting scenery. Unfortunately, not much details are available and I can only found this website here that offer minimal information. I heard from Wee Yeh that there is a minimum timing of < 6 hrs for full marathon before participants can enroll into it. It will be perhaps one of the most challenging target. Not just because of the timing but also because it will cost us a hefty sum of money to take part. We shall see how things go.
- Standard Chartered Marathon Dec 2011 – full marathon. This will be our last milestone of the year. This would be more to complete the circle that we have started this year. My personal target is to complete the marathon in less than 5 hrs 45 minutes.

As you can see these targets are ambitious, the training is going to be tough. There are a lot of uncertainty especially on whether I will be able to sustain such punishing pace during all these marathons. Applying the Nike’s motto, I am going to ‘Just do it’.
We have started on our training yesterday. Wee Yeh and myself ran around 6 km around Kent Ridge Park at a pace that left me breathless. It was more like an interval training where we sprinted and slowed down continuously throughout the run. It left me totally exhausted at the middle of the run. I was forced to stop to catch my breath. Nonetheless, I am fully aware that in order to meet the timing requirements such training to improve my timing is imperative. Wee Yeh seems to be in a much better conditioning. Come to think of that, he came a long way since last year. From someone who hated running and cannot complete even a 2.4 km to the current ‘speedy’ Wee Yeh, his transformation is a testament that nothing is impossible when you put your mind and soul to it. He is now my running idol.
How about you, my friend? Have you make plans to invest in your health next year? If you have not, why not consider joining me on this journey of ‘Run for my life’ project? I will need the company. We can encourage each other along the way. Drop me an email if you are interested. You can also call me to arrange to join us on our weekly Wed run.
